You might be LDS if you have to lock your car in the church parking lot to keep it from being filled with zucchini, tomatoes, and egg plants.

Mormon Jargon

JARGON by Lawrence Heywood
My son's a CTR ... I go to PEC.
I work for CES....I study the TG.
I read the B of M .... I probe the D&C.
I search the KJV ... I ponder the JST.
Today in BYC ... we planned for EFY.
I stayed a little after ... and had a PPI.
The YM and YW ... are putting on a play.
It's one that I remember ...we did in MIA.
Before our oldest son ...went in the MTC,
He helped the BSA .... complete their SME.
Soon our oldest daughter ... is heading for the Y.
Soon our oldest clothing ... is going to DI.
Now, if you've understood ... this alphabetic mess,
The chances are quite good ... that you are LDS.

Statistics

The Hazards of Bread

1. More than 98 percent of convicted felons are bread eaters.

2. Fully HALF of all children who grow up in bread-consuming households score below average on standardized tests.

3. In the 18th century, when virtually all bread was baked in the home, the average life expectancy was less than 50 years; infant mortality rates were unacceptably high; many women died in childbirth; and diseases such as typhoid, yellow fever, and influenza ravaged whole nations.

4. More than 90 percent of violent crimes are committed within 24 hours of eating bread.

5. Bread is made fram a substance called "dough". It has been proven that as little as one pound of dough can be used to suffocate a mouse. The average American eats more bread than that in one month!!

6. Primitive tribal societies that have no bread exhibit a low occurance of cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinsons's disease and osteporosis.

7. Bread has been proven to be addictive. Subjects deprived of bread and given only water to eat begged for bread after only two days!

8. Bread is often a "gateway" food item, leading the user to "harder" items such as butter, jelly, peanut butter and even cold cuts!

9. Bread has been proven to absorb water. Since the human body is more than 90% water, it follows that eating bread could lead to your body being taken over by this absorptive food product, turning you into a soggy, gooey bread-pudding person.

10. Newborn babies can choke on bread.

11. Bread is baked at temperatures as high as 400 degrees Farenheit! That kind of heat can kill an adult in less than one minute.

12. Most American bread eaters are utterly unable to distinguish between significant scientific fact and meaningless babbling.

Household Principles for Children from the Old Testament

Household Principles for Children from the Old Testament - Lamentations of the Father by Ian Frazier

I - Laws of Forbidden Places
Of the beasts of the field, and of the fishes of the sea, and of all foods that are acceptable in my sight you may eat, but not in the living room. Of the hoofed animals, broiled or ground into burgers, you may eat, but not in the living room. Of the cloven-hoofed animal, plain or with cheese, you may eat, but not in the living room.
Of the cereal grains, of the corn and of the wheat and of the oats, and of all the cereals that are of bright color and unknown provenance you may eat, but not in the living room. Of quiescently frozen dessert and of all frozen after-meal treats you may eat, but absolutely not in the living room. Of the juices and other beverages, yes, even of those in sippy-cups, you may drink, but not in the living room, neither may you carry such therein. Indeed, when you reach the place where the living room carpet begins, of any food or beverage there you may not eat, neither may you drink. But if you are sick, and are lying down and watching something, then may you eat in the living room.
II - Laws When at Table
And if you are seated in your high chair, or in a chair such as a greater person might use, keep your legs and feet below you as they were. Neither raise up your knees, nor place your feet upon the table, for that is an abomination to me. Yes, even when you have an interesting bandage to show, your feet upon the table are an abomination, and worthy of rebuke.
Drink your milk as it is given you, neither use on it any utensils, nor fork, nor knife, nor spoon, for that is not what they are for; if you will dip your blocks in the milk, and lick it off, you will be sent away.
When you have drunk, let the empty cup then remain upon the table, and do not bite it upon its edge and by your teeth hold it to your face in order to make noises in it sounding like a duck: for you will be sent away.
When you chew your food, keep your mouth closed until you have swallowed, and do not open it to show your brother or your sister what is within; I say to you, do not so, even if your brother or your sister has done the same to you.
Eat your food only; do not eat that which is not food; neither seize the table between your jaws, nor use the raiment of the table to wipe your lips. I say again to you, do not touch it, but leave it as it is.
And though your stick of carrot does indeed resemble a marker, draw not with it upon the table, even in pretend, for we do not do that, that is why. And though the pieces of broccoli are very like small trees, do not stand them upright to make a forest, because we do not do that, that is why.
Sit just as I have told you, and do not lean to one side or the other, nor slide down until you are nearly slid away. Heed me; for if you sit like that, your hair will go into the syrup. And now behold, even as I have said, it has come to pass.
III - Laws Pertaining to Dessert
For we judge between the plate that is unclean and the plate that is clean, saying first, if the plate is clean, then you shall have dessert.
But of the unclean plate, the laws are these: If you have eaten most of your meat, and two bites of your peas with each bite consisting of not less than three peas each, or in total six peas, eaten where I can see, and you have also eaten enough of your potatoes to fill two forks, both forkfuls eaten where I can see, then you shall have dessert.
But if you eat a lesser number of peas, and yet you eat the potatoes, still you shall not have dessert; and if you eat the peas, yet leave the potatoes uneaten, you shall not have dessert, no, not even a small portion thereof.
And if you try to deceive by moving the potatoes or peas around with a fork, that it may appear you have eaten what you have not, you will fall into iniquity. And I will know, and you shall have no dessert.
IV - On Screaming
Do not scream; for it is as if you scream all the time. If you are given a plate on which two foods you do not wish to touch each other are touching each other, your voice rises up even to the ceiling, while you point to the offense with the finger of your right hand; but I say to you, scream not, only remonstrate gently with the server, that the server may correct the fault.
Likewise if you receive a portion of fish from which every piece of herbal seasoning has not been scraped off, and the herbal seasoning is loathsome to you and steeped in vileness, again I say, refrain from screaming. Though the vileness overwhelm you, and cause you a faint unto death, make not that sound from within your throat, neither cover your face, nor press your fingers to your nose. For even I have made the fish as it should be; behold, I eat it myself, yet do not die.
V - Concerning Face and Hands
Cast your countenance upward to the light, and lift your eyes to the hills, that I may more easily wash you off. For the stains are upon you; even to the very back of your head, there is rice thereon.
And in the breast pocket of your garment, and upon the tie of your shoe, rice and other fragments are distributed in a manner wonderful to see.
Only hold yourself still; hold still, I say. Give each finger in its turn for my examination thereof, and also each thumb. Lo, how iniquitous they appear. What I do is as it must be; and you shall not go hence until I have done.
VI - Various Other Laws, Statutes, and Ordinances
Bite not, lest you be cast into quiet time. Neither drink of your own bath water, nor of the bath water of any kind; nor rub your feet on bread, even if it be in the package; nor rub yourself against cars, not against any building; nor eat sand.
Leave the cat alone, for what has the cat done, that you should so afflict it with tape? And hum not the humming in your nose as I read, nor stand between the light and the book. Indeed, you will drive me to madness. Nor forget what I said about the tape.

GREAT TRUTHS ABOUT LIFE THAT ADULTS HAVE LEARNED

2. There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it. For example, I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.
3. Reason to smile: Every seven minutes of every day, someone in an aerobics class pulls a hamstring.
4. The best way to keep kids at home is to make the home a pleasant atmosphere...and let the air out of their tires.

Bible Jokes

1)
And Adam said, "Lord, when I was in the garden, you walked with me everyday. Now I do not see you anymore. I am lonesome here and it is difficult for me to remember how much you love me."
And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will know I love you, even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish and childish and unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourself."
And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam. And it was a good animal. And God was pleased.
And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and he wagged his tail. And Adam said, "But Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and all the good names are taken and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."
And God said, "No problem! Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG."
And Dog lived with Adam and was a companion to him and loved him. And Adam was comforted. And God was pleased. And Dog was content and wagged his tail.
After a while, it came to pass that Adam's guardian angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam has become filled with pride. He struts and preens like a peacock and he believes he is worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught him that he is loved, but no one has taught him humility."
And the Lord said, "No problem! I will create for him a companion who will be with him forever and who will see him as he is. The companion will remind him of his limitations, so he will know that he is not always worthy of adoration."
And God created CAT (Companion for Adam's Teaching) to be a companion to Adam. And Cat would not obey Adam.
And when Adam gazed into Cat's eyes, he was reminded that he was not the supreme being. And Adam learned humility.
And God was pleased. And Adam was greatly improved.
And Cat did not care one way or the other.

2)
Scriptures according to children. These appeared in National Review magazine on December 31, 1995.
In the first book of the Bible, Guinness's, God got tired of creating the world, so He took the Sabbath off. Adam and Eve were created from an apple tree. Noah's wife was called Joan of Ark. Noah built an ark, the animals came on to in pears. Lot's wife was a pillar of salt by day, but a ball of fire by night.
Samson was a strongman who let himself be led astray by a Jezebel like Delilah. Samson slayed the Philistines with the axe of the apostles. Moses led the Hebrews to the Red Sea, where they made unleavened bread, which is bread made without any ingredients. The Egyptians were all drowned in the dessert. Afterwards, Moses went up on Mount Cyanide to get the Ten Amendments. The First Commandment was when Eve told Adam to eat the apple. The Fifth Commandment is to humor thy father and mother. The seventh Commandment is thou shalt not admit adultery. Moses died before he ever reached Canada. Then Joshua led the Hebrews in the battle of Geritol. The greatest miracle in the Bible is when Joshua told his son to stand still and he obeyed him.
David was a Hebrew king skilled at playing the liar. He fought with the Finklesteins, a race of people who lived in Biblical times. Solomon, one of David's sons, had 300 wives and 700 porcupines. Jesus enunciated the Golden Rule, which says to do one to others before they do one to you. He also explained, "Man doth not live by sweat alone."
The people who followed the Lord were called the 12 decibels. The epistles were the wives of the apostles. One of the opossums was St. Matthew who was, by profession, a taximan. St. Paul cavorted to Christianity. He preached holy acrimony, which is another name for marriage. A Christian should have only one wife. This is called monotony.

3)
The Top Ten Ways the Bible Would Have Been Different If Written by College Students:
10). Loaves and Fishes replaced by Pizza and Chips
9). Ten Commandments are actually only five, but because they are double-spaced and written in a large font, they look like ten.
8). Forbidden fruit would have been eaten only because it wasn't dining hall food.
7). Paul's Letters to the Romans become Paul's E-Mail to the Romans.
6). Reason Cain killed Abel: They were roommates.
5). The place where the end of the world occurs.... not the Plains of Armageddon, but Finals.
4). Book of Armaments would be in there somewhere.
3). Reason why Moses and followers wandered in desert for 40 years: They didn't want to ask directions and look like a Freshman.
2). Tower of Babel blamed for Foreign Language requirement.
1). Instead of creating the world in six days and resting on the seventh, God would have put it off until the night before it was due and then pulled an all-nighter and hoped no one noticed.

4)
ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED FROM NOAH'S ARK
1. Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark.
2. Stay fit. When you're 600 years old, someone might ask you to do something REALLY big.
3. Don't listen to critics -- do what has to be done.
4. Build on high ground.
5. For safety's sake, travel in pairs.
6. Two heads are better than one.
7. Speed isn't always an advantage. The cheetahs were on board, but so were the snails.
8. If you can't fight or flee -- float!
9. Take care of your animals as if they were the last ones on earth.
10. Don't forget that we're all in the same boat.
11. Stay below deck during the storm.
12. Remember that the ark was built by amateurs and the Titanic was built by professionals.
13. If you have to start over, have a friend by your side.
14. Remember that the woodpeckers INSIDE are often a bigger threat than the storm outside.
15. Don't miss the boat.
16. No matter how bleak it looks, there's always a rainbow on the other side.

Steve's EMT Rules

Previously published as a Facebook note.
Steve took an EMT class in college before his mission. These are "DA RULES:"
EMS “Da Rules”
  1. All bleeding stops… eventually
  2. Air goes in and out. Blood goes round and round. Any variation of that is a bad thing.
  3. Skin signs tell all.
  4. You can’t cure stupid.
  5. There is no such thing as a textbook case.
  6. All people will eventually die, no matter what you do.
  7. If the child is still and quiet… be afraid.
  8. There will be problems.
  9. If it is wet, sticky, and not yours… leave it alone!
  10. If you are dispatched to an MVA (motor vehicle accident) after 2 AM and you don’t find a drunk, keep looking because someone is still missing.
  11. Shallow gene pool is not a diagnosis.
  12. Sick people don’t b****.
  13. About 70% of all battery patients more than likely deserved it.
  14. The more equipment you see on an EMT’s belt the newer they are.
  15. The more patches an EMT has on his/her jacket, the fewer actual patients they have seen.
  16. When dealing with patients, supervisors, or citizens, if it felt good saying it, it was the wrong thing to say.
  17. Never trust the ambulance to be fully stocked. If you don’t have it, improvise. Improvisation is the mother of invention.
  18. Probies always look for large things in the small compartments and vice versa.
  19. If the patient is going to vomit, aim them at the person you like the least.
  20. Take comfort: most of your patients will survive regardless of what you do to them.
  21. Sick people only call because they couldn’t get in their car. They apologize for bothering you. When you see them, be afraid.
  22. When a pregnant woman says “the baby is coming” you better believe her.
  23. When a patient says “I think I am going to die” he is probably right.
  24. Beware of “guard geese.”
  25. The dog that “never bites” really does.
  26. Never believe the dispatcher.
  27. When evacuating a “HAZMAT” scene, stay 200 feet back from the first dead cop or firefighter, whichever comes first.
  28. “HAZMAT” workers are trained professionals, not “glow worms.”
  29. When removing a patient’s shoes, beware of “toxic shock syndrome.”
  30. Never leave the alcohol swabs unattended.
  31. Never forget your patients are “human.” Sometimes the best medicine is simply holding someone’s hand.

Divorce Agreement

Divorce Agreement
Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, Marxists and Obama supporters, et al:

We have stuck together since the late 1950's, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has run its course. Our two ideological sides of America cannot and will not ever agree on what is right so let's just end it on friendly terms. We can smile and chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and go our own way.

Here is a model separation agreement:

Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass each taking a portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy! Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate tastes.

We don't like redistributive taxes so you can keep them. You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. Since you hate guns and war, we'll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donnell (You are, however, responsible for finding a bio-diesel vehicle big enough to move all three of them).

We'll keep the capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart and Wall Street. You can have your beloved homeless, homeboys, hippies and illegal aliens. We'll keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, greedy CEO's and rednecks. We'll keep the Bibles and give you NBC and Hollywood

You can make nice with Iran and Palestine and we'll retain the right to invade and hammer places that threaten us. You can have the peaceniks and war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we'll help provide them security.

We'll keep our Judeo-Christian values.. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism and Shirley McClain. You can also have the U.N.. but we will no longer be paying the bill.

We'll keep the SUVs, pickup trucks and oversized luxury cars. You can take every Subaru station wagon you can find.

You can give everyone healthcare if you can find any practicing doctors. We'll continue to believe healthcare is a luxury and not a right. We'll keep The Battle Hymn of the Republic and the National Anthem. I'm sure you'll be happy to substitute Imagine, I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing, Kum Ba Ya or We Are the World.

We'll practice trickle down economics and you can give trickle up poverty your best shot. Since it often so offends you, we'll keep our history, our name and our flag.

Would you agree to this? If so, please pass it along to other like minded liberal and conservative patriots and if you do not agree, just hit delete. In the spirit of friendly parting, I'll bet you ANWAR which one of us will need whose help in 15 years.

Sincerely,

John J. Wall

P.S. Also, please take Barbara Streisand & Jane Fonda with you.

On Flushing - Letter to the Editor

To our well-mannered fellow students, we congratulate you. It has come to our attention that it is possible for a person to become so advanced in their knowledge and intent on furthering it they can neglect or even forget the basics upon which their field of study is established.
We suppose that some people become so loaded with stress and the responsibilities of college life that they forget the very fundamentals taught at home when they were three years old. Though it is a simple task that most students do without thinking, the current trend of not flushing the toilet is becoming so popular that we are beginning to wonder if it is a new fad!
To help combat this problem, we propose that BYU offer a mandatory class entitled “Basic Restroom 101.” In it, students (and faculty) would learn there is more than one way to flush a toilet; there are four. Pull the handle up, push it down, rotate it until it flushes, or use your foot. Girls would learn that anything soiled with blood, a biohazardous substance, should be disposed of in the white boxes provided in every stall. Upper division courses and private tutoring will be made available for those who express interest or exhibit apparent need.
Cordially, your fellow students and custodians,
Angela Berrett and Scott Blanch

Quote Wall - Fall 2009 Norma's #3

Previously published as a Facebook note.
In order of most to least quotes:
Jessica
Doesn't he just look like he's on CRACK?
Just because I'm small doesn't mean I can't appreciate a dead cow on a plate.
I'm just not feeling intrinsically wisdomish.
It's assumed teenagers have brains, but that they're dormant.
I feel bad profiting off all your hard work, but I'll still do it, with a song in my heart.
I'm not supposed to be same - I'm female.
It's dangerous to be a closet leaper - shin injuries.
SEMI-bread of life - otherwise it would be blasphemous, and we can't have that.
Now I have an un-Christmas card list, and she's on THAT.
Why do we have to have them doing it in our kitchen?
Little aliens come with squirt hoses.
We have to put on a man-strut song.
In the resurrection when I'm not allergic anymore I'm playing with cats every single day.
Haven't you ever wanted to butter a sparrow?
I have my own dead cow! Ha!
Steve (Angela's boyfriend)
It could just be that I haven't spent so much time so close to other people's stomachs.
Jessica, do goldfish reproduce sexually or do they spawn?
I have nothing against the manly leap. I do it myself sometimes when nobody's watching.
Color pwn!
High heaven must be a stinky place, 'cuz everything stinks to it.
That's how the French say 'Merry Christmas.' They build people stuff.
Santa pwn!
There's two rules you have to follow: you don't cup, and you don't rub.
I can pretend there's pretend meat.
Julie
I feel sort of Asian right now 'cuz I have a square bowl.
I have those [munchies] every day. I think I'm a crack addict in my sleep, or something.
My life is complete!
I just wanna be Black because then I can tell people what I think and not get beat down for it.
Kirsten
I'm not a fan of sleeping with mosquitoes. I'm saving myself for someone.
I'm not sure how I feel about this... you just hatched a spoon.
Question mark?
Angela
What kind of church do YOU have?
I need to go sell my body. Julie should come too.
I can make octopus faces! If octopuses had faces, that's what they'd look like!
Becca (Julie's friend)
If you have a brain, it has to be intelligent.
Julie and I are never going to get married. We're going to move to Italy and get lots of purses.
Shaun (Kirsten's fiance, now husband)
Makes sense - they're both brains.
Hilary (Jessica's friend)
No one in this movie has a tan - not even the Black guy.
Two-person quotes:
"That's racial profiling!" - Steve "They're freaking pickles!" - Angela
"It would be like having a period that never ends." - Steve "FML." - goldfish
"They're trying to make one!" - Kirsten "They can't make it that way!" - Angela

Funny situations

“Find Humor in Everyday Situations, Speaker Urges” by Cerisa Urry, on Barbara Barrington Jones

Jones told a story of a time when President Spencer W. Kimball was kneeling by his desk to pray. As he was on his knees a person walked in and found he was laughing; he then excused himself for interrupting and President Kimball replied, “Oh don’t bother, I just told Heavenly Father a joke.”

Why I'm Awesome

I did this for a job application, and it helps to perk my mood too!

I am a hard worker. I am dedicated to the task I am expected to do and do a very thorough job with whatever I’m assigned. I pay great attention to detail because I want to do well. I know how to keep things well organized and tidy so that I can be more efficient and productive. I am always willing to learn more and help others.
I am a fast hands-on learner with a good memory. I take direction from supervisors well and am not afraid to ask for help if I need it. As it pertains to leadership, unless I really know what I’m doing and don’t have too much expected of me all at once, if I must lead I prefer to be in a leadership position either under or with another person so we can help each other out. I enjoy working with people but I also enjoy working alone.
I am a very friendly, nice person and enjoy interacting with others in teamwork or customer service situations, among others. I love doing service for others; it is a priority of mine to make sure others are well taken care of and happy. If the situation allows, I will go out of my way to help someone with a project, whether big or small with no thought of repayment. People value my friendship and giving nature and I have been complimented on this many times.
I can have fun in any situation and am usually a very optimistic and happy person. If someone is not having a good day, I do my best to help lighten their mood; even if I am having a bad day I make sure to pretend I’m not and still try to cheer them up so that we can both feel better and be more productive. I try to always be the one that people can go to if they need anything; a task completed, someone to talk to, someone to cheer them up, etc.
I always stick to my principles and stand up for what I believe in. I will defend others if they are not being respected or treated fairly in whatever way is appropriate for the situation; standing up and putting in a good word for them, offering advice on how to approach a situation (if they have told me about another circumstance), or just being someone that will listen when people want to talk about their frustrations/stressors. I can usually tell what people are in the mood for; when people want someone to just listen or someone to give suggestions or advice, for example.

Parenting and Media

“Professor Gives Tips on Protecting Children in the Digital Age” by Michael Edwards, on Professor Charles Knutson, BYU Computer Science dept.

Completely cutting off a child from interaction with technology and the internet, Knutson said, should be avoided because it would rob the child of the chance to learn to limit themselves in the safety of the home.
“If you pull the plug you forfeit the opportunity for the child to make the mistakes they’re going to make in a protected environment,” he said.
Knutson then went on to talk about various parenting styles and their inherent strengths and weaknesses.
First, he discussed authoritarian parenting, which is parenting with a great deal of external control. He said the weakness of this type of parenting is it doesn’t allow kids the chance to make their own decisions or prepare them for temptations they will encounter once they leave the home.
Next, he talked about permissive parenting, which essentially involves no external control – because the parents think that is best, or because they’re simply not there. He said this is dangerous because there are no morals or guidelines passed on to the children.
Third, and most effective in helping children cope with digital temptations, Knutson talked about authoritative parenting. He said this parenting philosophy has clear standards of conduct for the children, and its discipline is supportive, not punitive.
“Authoritative parents take the perspective that their job is to empower their children to independently make good choices,” Knutson said, quoting Nancy Willard, a professional in the realm of safe and responsible use of the Internet.
